Preamble

It is the purpose of this organization to promote awareness, advocacy, and outreach on issues that not only affect the Indiana University South Bend lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, and transgendered community, but the lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, and transgendered community at large.  This organization shall promote equality in all aspects of our community.  It shall also strive for an end to all discrimination, the eradication of hate, and to secure civil rights.

Article I – Organization Identity

Section 1.The name of this organization shall be “Indiana University South Bend Equality”.  The name “IUSB Equality” may be used as a variation.

Section 2. This organization is an independent student group.

Article II – General Assembly

Section 1. IUSB Equality shall be a student run organization.

Section 2. Voting members shall include all current students of the university.

Section 3. Ex-officio members shall include all staff, faculty and Alumni of Indiana University South Bend, and members of the community at large.

Section 4. Persons meeting the requirements of membership shall not be denied membership on the basis of race, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, national origin, color, religion, or political beliefs, physical or mental handicaps.

Article III – Executive Board

Section 1. The Executive Board of IUSB Equality shall consist of four (4) officers who shall conduct the business of this organization.
A.President
1.The President shall preside over all meetings, call executive meetings, form committees and appoint committee chairpersons with the consent of the membership.
2.Recruit and contact speakers, organize fundraisers, organize and maintain bulletin boards, organize field trips, order club apparel, edit the newsletter, and maintain a list of active members.
B.Vice President
1.The Vice President shall assume the duties of the office of the President in his or her absence if he or she is unable to perform the above stated duties.
2.Assist the President, prepare at least four newsletters a years and distribute those newsletters amongst the members.
C.Secretary
1.The Secretary shall keep attendance records, take accurate minutes of all Executive Board meetings as well as notify the members of the time and place of meetings and any events in a timely manner.
2.Prepare and distribute promotional material for events as well as prepare thank you letters in a timely fashion.
D.Treasurer
1.The Treasurer shall maintain an accurate record of receipts and disbursement of funds and maintain the organization’s account in accordance with University regulations.
2.Submit regular book total reports to members and see to it that reimbursements are handled in a timely manner.
Section 2. Candidates seeking office must have a cumulative GAP of 2.5 or higher, and must be enrolled in a minimum of six (6) credit hours per semester.

Section 3. Once elected the officers shall take office on the first of May of the current year and shall remain in office until the first of May of the following year, or until they are unable to perform their duties.

Section 4. Members who wish to run for office must sign up to run when elections are announced.  Elections will take place at the last meeting of the spring term in April. 

Article IV – Meetings

Section 1. As a grassroots advocacy organization, our members will be offered opportunities to contact important legislators on LGBT issues.  Educational opportunities and field excursions will be arranged with the hope that the membership will attend.  Regular meetings of the Executive Board will serve to coordinate these efforts and plan educational, social, and fundraising events.  Committees shall meet at the convenience of their members.  Members are always welcome at the meetings, but attendance is not required and a quorum is not compulsory.

Section 2. In order to organize educational and social opportunities as well as raise funds for IUSB Equality, elected members of the Executive Board are expected to come to scheduled meetings and events.

Article V – Impeachment and Removal

Section 1. Officers of IUSB Equality may be impeached for malfeasance in office, dereliction of duty, or failing to comply with the purposes and objectives of IUSB Equality.
Section 2. A petition signed by 2/3 of the officers and or membership of this organization shall initiate impeachment proceedings.

Section 3. The officer in question shall be notified in writing 14 days prior to the meeting scheduled to discuss his or her impeachment.  The time, location and all allegations shall be specified in the correspondence.  During this meeting, the officer in question shall be provided with an opportunity to address the allegations.

Section 4. In the event of presidential impeachment proceedings, the Vice President shall chair the meeting and at least one advisor shall be present.

Section 5. A ¾ secret vote of the attending active members in an open meeting shall constitute removal permanently.

Article VI – Vacancies

Section 1. In the event that the President of this organization can no longer assume the duties of that office, the Executive Board shall elect a new President.

Section 2. In the event that a vacancy occurs in any office other than the presidency, the remaining officers shall elect a new officer.

Article VII – Advisors

Section 1. One full-time faculty or administrative staff member of Indiana University South Bend shall be invited by IUSB Equality to serve as the group’s primary advisor.  IUSB Equality may also have a secondary advisor that does not need to be a full-time faculty or administrative staff member of Indiana University South Bend.  The advisor will serve as an advocate for IUSB Equality and will help facilitate a smooth transition from one year’s Executive Board members to the next. The advisor(s) shall also ensure that all business conducted by this group meets all university standards.  The organization will keep their advisor(s) informed of all activities, meetings, plans, and events.

Section 2. Advisor(s) shall be asked to respond, in a timely manner, to all communications between the Executive Board and be available to the board for advice and direction. Also he or she shall be required to sign all Bursar request forms submitted to them in a timely fashion, as well as attend as many events as possible. It is also requested that if the advisor(s) is going to be unavailable for more than a week, to notify the Executive Board of such conditions.

Article VIII – Amendments

Section 1. A simple majority of voting members is required to amend this constitution
